Here is another example of the awful consequences of BULLYING. Jay Corey Jones, a bright young man of 17, was bullied to the point that he slipped into deep depression and committed suicide. Even being a member of the High School’s Gay-Straight Alliance wasn’t enough to prevent the destruction that these wanton criminal acts contributed to (if not caused). This young man was so desperate that he jumped from a pedestrian bridge near Century High School in Rochester, MN onto a busy highway where he was killed in what may have been a painful death.
The Post-Bulletin reports: “In response to an inquiry from the Post-Bulletin, schools Superintendent Michael Muñoz issued a statement acknowledging there are issues related to bullying in the district.” Issues related to bullying? No kidding! What gave you the first clue?” How many more deaths will have to occur before this Superintendent wakes up and acknowledges what is going on in his schools?
The article continues: “The district is in the planning stages of providing training and support for students, staff and families, Muñoz said, and will continue anti-bullying collaborations with Gov. Mark Dayton’s recently formed anti-bullying task force, Rochester police and others in the community.” I say that if you are going to talk the talk, then walk the walk!
Jones, who was from Chicago, was brought back to this city for his funeral. It is so sad and wasteful when anyone is bullied and ends up committing suicide. Who knows what society has lost as a result of his untimely death. Maybe he could have found a cure for cancer or some other important discovery. We’ll never know. I know his spirit/mind/soul, whatever you call it, is at peace where it’s at. I just wish that people would stop and think about the consequences of their actions, and accept responsibility for them.
